Millennials are often described as a generation addicted to social media, and technology. Our short attention spans coupled with distraction-induced forgetfulness makes recall of information from our elementary, middle, and high school years elusive. We never had to memorize anything because all the information we need are readily available with just clicks away.

As a Millennial, our mindset desire feedback, making a difference, and diversely complex. We had this upbringing like no other in history of which technology has and will continue to revolutionize our behaviors and values that have never existed before.  

These are just the start of what should be a lifelong dedication to re-educating ourselves, and others around us. We cannot really understand modern policy, discourse, and systemic inequalities if we do not have a firm grasp on history. Here are several reasons why Millennial should study History.

1. Relevant skills

Studying History provides us with skills that are not confined to the study of the past. Skills of analysis are invaluable in many jobs, and the ability to analyse and then prioritize information is vital to decision making. This not only provides a skill set for a student but it also keeps career options open.  

2. History is not boring at all

There is a stigma attached to History that it is based entirely in the distant past, but this does not account for the huge amount of modern history which is studied in such depth. In order to make sense of current affairs it is important to study the past, as everything which is happening around us has been influenced by, and is a direct result of, that which preceded it. In this way, the study of History is explicitly relevant to us, millennials.  

3. A History degree is an investment

If studied at an esteemed university, a degree in History can be an impressive and attractive feature for a competitive portfolio. Knowing that Millennials are the most-competitive breed of societal workforce.  

4. History provides identity  

Historical knowledge is our collective memory, and like many degrees, History can be easily combined with a number of other subjects. From geography, civilization, economics, culture, to the range of joint honors available is seemingly endless. Without learning those, we could literally lose our sense of identity.

5. History encourages independence  

A degree in History endorses independence in young people. Knowledge is not just handed over at degree level; it requires hard work, and in a subject dominated by reading, students will develop self-sufficiency and become less dependent pupils.  

6. Studying History provides cultural awareness

By looking at the history of different cultures, a History student can build up a better understanding of why certain peoples act the way they do. By studying at the various tributaries of humanity, a broad cultural awareness is yours for the taking.

Thus, by making a serious effort to understand the interplay of change and continuity in human affairs, we provide ourselves with an introduction to the confusing rush of events that constitutes the actual, adult world.
